France’s wildfires are still burning as of July 27, 2026. The worst damage is in Gironde and Landes in the southwest, plus Var in the Mediterranean.
Nearly 98,000 hectares have burned this year. That is about 242,000 acres. Gironde alone accounts for 42,000 hectares of that total.
The Gironde fire is stabilized but not out. Light rain and favorable winds have slowed it, but the fire remains active and unpredictable. Over 220,000 people are still under evacuation orders.
A heatwave hitting 40°C starts Tuesday. This will make firefighting much harder.
